Johnny Manziel’s father is at his wit’s end and has given up on “Johnny Football.”
Paul Manziel told ESPN on Friday that his son is “a druggie” and that the best thing that could happen to the unemployed professional football player is if he ends up in jail — otherwise, he’ll probably die.
“He’s a druggie. It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie,” Manziel said. “I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. He just hasn’t [sought] it yet. Hopefully he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. That’s about all you can say. I don’t know what else to say.”
“I hate to say it, but I hope he goes to jail,” he added. “I mean, that would be the best place for him.”
The distraught father said intervention efforts the family has made on his son’s behalf over the years have failed.
“I had him in rehab and he escaped and the doctors let him go, and that is a whole other story,” the senior Manziel said. “So I mean I had him [in rehab] and the system failed. It didn’t work.”
And he understands his son’s extensive wealth — Manziel signed a 4 year $8.24 million contract with the Cleveland Browns in 2014, before being cut earlier this year — is a contributing factor to his addiction.
“He has more money than me, so he can outrun me,” the father said. “Like I said, there are two things that are going to happen: He’s either going to die, or he’s going to figure out that he needs help. It’s one of the two.”
Manziel concluded by saying the family has “done everything that we can do,” and an errant text his son’s attorney sent to an Associated Press reporter seems to confirm that determination.
Attorney Bob Hinton, who’s handling Manziel’s domestic violence case, said in the text that he was given a receipt that shows Manziel might have spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia store just hours after he was involved in a recent  hit-and-run crash, ESPN reported.
“Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle,” Hinton wrote.
