Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa wants to keep Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
In legislation introduced on Tuesday, King attempted to block the U.S. Treasury Department from replacing Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the bill, the Huffington Post reported.
The amendment seeks to bar the Treasury Department from spending funds to redesign paper money or coin currency. If approved, the legislation would put a halt to plans to replace the seventh president of the United States with abolitionist Tubman, well-known for her work in the Underground Railroad helping escaped slaves during the Civil War.
The Treasury Department had announced plans in April to make the change, as momentum builds to put a female on U.S. currency for the 100-year anniversary of women’s right to vote in 2020. If King’s amendment fails, Tubman could be the first black woman featured on American currency.
Though the reason for the amendment was not yet clear, King hoped to attach the legislation to a broader bill authorizing the Treasury’s budget, according to the Huffington Post.
