Since the Orlando terrorist attack, where an Islamic jihadist opened fire in a gay night club and killed at least 49 people, GOP nominee Donald Trump’s poll numbers have increased against opponent Hillary Clinton.
Trump’s hard-line stance against Islamic terrorism and mass immigration of Syrian refugees into the country are resonating with voters, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The poll, conducted from Monday to Friday, showed Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, with a 10.7 point lead among likely voters over Trump, her likely Republican rival in the November presidential election. That’s down from a lead of 14.3 points for Clinton on Sunday, the day an American-born shooter who declared allegiance to militant group Islamic State killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
Following the attack, Trump was praised by supporters for immediately calling out the influence of ISIS-related Muslim extremist ideology, which teaches that homosexuality should be punishable by death.
Broadening his widely popular temporary Muslim immigration ban, Trump announced that he would temporarily ban immigration from any country with a “proven history of terrorism” against the US.
While the mainstream media, and even some Republicans, have panned Trump for the Muslim immigration ban, some 45 percent of Americans support the proposal, according to the poll, up from 41.9 percent before the Orlando terrorist attack.
Clinton, on the other hand, rarely touched on the issue of radical jihad and instead insisted on further gun control measures that would limit US citizens from obtaining guns labeled by the federal government as being unnecessary to own.
