Given Donald Trump‘s electoral success, the only member of Congress that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has endorsed was surely caught by surprise by the outcome of Tuesday’s primary election.
U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers, an avid early supporter of Trump, became the first GOP incumbent this year to lose her seat after being defeated by U.S. Rep. George Holding, according to The Hill. The North Carolina lawmakers were pitted against each other because of redistricting in the state.
Ellmers loss was quickly jumped on by critics who claim that Trump will hurt Republicans down ticket.
Conservative groups such as Club for Growth and Americans for Prosperity targeted Ellmers in the race — Club for Growth was labeled “Trump enemy No. 1” by The Hill in March after the group spent millions on ads targeting Trump’s liberal record.
Another setback for Ellmers was that the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List backed Holding — it was the first time the organization has ever backed a male candidate over a woman, The Hill reported.
Speaking of women, Ellmers found herself embroiled in an unpleasant controversy Tuesday after being captured on camera — as voting was underway — commented on the weight of a woman supporting her opponent.
“You’re eating a little too much pork barbecue,” Ellmers said. “Whoo!”
The woman was identified by local CBS affiliate WNCN as Maggie Sandrock, the former chairwoman of the Harnett County Republican Party who once supported Ellmers.
“Typical Renee,” Sandrock told WNCN, when asked to comment. “She has become a mean girl on steroids in my view.”
