Police apprehended a man who, they said, ran over a Navy veteran and his passenger on Memorial Day in a road rage incident.
Joseph Calderazzo, 46, was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on his way to dinner when a silver Pontiac swerved into his lane, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
When they stopped at a traffic light Calderazzo told the Pontiac driver, who was later identified as repeat traffic offender Robert Paul Vance, 31, what he thought of his driving ability.
Rather than argue with words Vance backed up his car, aimed towards the Harley and ran over Calderazzo and his passenger Melanie Ann Milinkovich.
“We knew we got hit, but when you see the video, oh my God.” Calderazzo told the Times, “We could have died.”
Calderazzo only suffered a broken fibula and Milinkovich received some minor injuries.
But police agreed that the potential to kill them was real and they have charged Vance with two counts of attempted murder.
“A few more inches to the right and he would have run the guy smack over,” Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins told the Times.
Vance had previously been convicted of DUI, reckless driving, hit and run and driving on a suspended license.
His license has been revoked or suspended several times and he’s served two jail sentences on drug charges, according to the Times.
