Donald Trump, who has been repeatedly accused of making racist comments, drew more criticism Friday for the way he praised a supporter in a crowd in California.
“Oh, look at my African-American over here. Look at him,” Trump said during a rally in Redding. “Are you the greatest?”
Trump made the comment as he retold a story to the crowd about a black supporter who “slugged” a protester at a rally in Arizona, CNN reported. The remark, which did not appear to get a response from the crowd, meant “no ill will,” according to a campaign spokeswoman.
The presumptive Republican nominee was “just referring to a supporter in the crowd. There’s no ill will intended, obviously,” Hope Hicks told CNN, adding that Trump was “grateful for this person’s support.” She also called “ridiculous” the charge that Trump using the possessive form “my” to refer to the supporter was racist.
As a matter of fact, the person singled out by Trump, Gregory Cheadle, said he was not offended at all and was happy to have gotten Trump’s attention.
Trump’s remarks Friday added to the criticism he has received, drawing charges of racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia for his rhetoric, according to CNN. He came under fire this week for attacking the federal judge overseeing the lawsuits over Trump University, calling his Mexican heritage a conflict of interest in the case.
But Trump maintains that his promise to bring back jobs will positively help minority communities and will draw African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans to his campaign.
