Hillary Clinton appears to have been rattled enough by a New York Times report on Thursday showing her in a statistical tie with rival Bernie Sanders in the California Democratic primary that she moved to add a campaign event in the Golden State.
A day after The Times reported that California is up for grabs — a new Public Policy Institute poll had Clinton up 46-to-44 — Team Hillary tacked on an event with community leaders in Oakland on Friday, according to MSNBC.
MSNBC’s Kristen Welker said Clinton was in “full damage control” after a tough week of bad news regarding her use of a private email service and needs some “momentum.”
“She in fact added an event here in Oakland today because the race is tight,” Welker said. “She wants to win California. She wants to head into the convention on solid ground and to do that, she has to win here, not so much necessarily for the math but for the momentum.”
The Times noted that Clinton had already responded to Sanders running TV ads in the state by running ads of her own Friday in the Los Angeles, Fresno and Sacramento markets.
From a mathematical standpoint, Clinton is all but assured of clinching the Democratic nomination at the party’s convention in June, but Sanders continues to be a significant thorn in her side — not only has he prevented Clinton from acquiring enough delegates to secure the nomination beforehand, he distracts her from being able to go head-to-head with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.
