Amid all the controversy over how much money Donald Trump did or did not raise for veteran groups, two vets squared off Tuesday over the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s commitment to the cause.

Retired Staff Sgt. Robert Bartlett, who was badly disfigured by an Iranian roadside bomb in Iraq in 2005, appeared on Fox News’ “The Kelly File” to suggest that Trump needs to actually “follow-through” on his pledge to help vets.

“If somebody says they support the veterans, they’ve got to support them… they’ve got to live it, they can’t just give away ideas or thoughts,” Bartlett said.

Former Navy SEAL Carl Higbie countered that Trump has been very generous to veterans and dismissed the controversy as a “witch hunt.”

“This is  like a high school kid complaining that they got a Lexus instead of a Lamborghini,” Higbie said, while blaming the media for all the fuss.

“The media have not succeeded in trying to hold down Trump,” he added.

Bartlett responded by saying he just wants people running for office to be honest and do the right thing, but Higbie took him to task for what he termed a “fairly shallow” dismissal of Trump’s generosity.

“I think it’s honestly uncharacteristic of a veteran to say something like that, respectfully,” Higbie said.

Bartlett went on to draw attention to the help many vets need and drew a comparison to former President George W. Bush.

“Bush is still out there helping the vets,” Bartlett said. “He doesn’t have to be… he’s still welcoming them home. That’s the kind of president I want.”
