There’s certainly no love lost between Bernie Sanders and Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the presidential contender drove the stake between them a little deeper on Sunday when he began fundraising for his nemesis’ primary opponent.
Sanders let it be known Sunday that he “favored” Tim Canova, who is challenging Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s 23rd district, but the self-avowed democratic socialist took his support a step further and is now raising coin for Canova, according to The Hill.
He told CNN’s Jake Tapper earlier in the day that Canova’s views “are much closer to mine than as to Wasserman Schultz.”
Following that admission, Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver sent out a fundraising email asking supporters to split a donation between Sanders and Canova.
“We’re doing this because it is too late for establishment politics and establishment economics,” Weaver wrote. “We need real change. We need U.S. Senators, members of Congress and state legislators who have the guts to take on the big money interests whose greed is destroying the American middle class.
“Tim Canova is one of those candidates, and I hope you’ll join Bernie in support of his campaign,” Weaver added.
The fundraising ploy comes a day after Sanders said he would oust Wasserman Schultz as DNC chairwoman if elected president.
As for Canova, he has already raised more than $ 1 million since launching his campaign in January and with Sanders being such a fundraising juggernaut, Canova could end up robbing Sanders of the pleasure of dispelling Wasserman Schultz, should he somehow reach the White House.
