It’s not often that President Obama and Congressional Democrats disagree THIS strongly, but here we are.
On Tuesday, over strong White House opposition, the Senate unanimously approved the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, which would allow 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia and other nation-states for their activities supporting terrorism.
The bi-partisan bill is sponsored by two unlikely allies, Senators Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. and John Cornyn, R-TX who have collaborated before on a variety of issues such as patent reform and recovering stolen Nazi art. According to Schumer, “This bill is very near and dear to my heart as a New Yorker because it would allow the victims of 9/11 to pursue some small measure of justice.”
If President Obama follows through on his threat to veto the bill, Senator Schumer expects the legislative branch to handily override the veto. “I think we easily get the two-thirds override if the president should veto.”
Both sponsors are trying to get an expedited House vote, but that will be up to a somewhat skeptical House Speaker Paul Ryan, who told reporters last month, “I think we need to look at it. I think we need to review it to make sure we are not making mistakes with our allies and we’re not catching people in this that shouldn’t be caught up in this.”
Senator Schumer had the perfect response to Saudi threats to sell off U.S. assets in retaliation for the bill, “Look, if the Saudis did not participate in this terrorism, they have nothing to fear about going to court. If they did, they should be held accountable.”
Things could get bad for Saudi Arabia, however, if Donald Trump gets elected. The presumptive Republican nominee doesn’t just disagree with Obama on the issue, he has called for the release of the 28 classified pages of the congressional report on the 9/11 terrorist attack, which could show complicity in the attack by some Saudi officials.
