Last month at The Citadel, South Carolina’s military college, an incoming Muslim female student put in a request to wear a hijab, a female Muslim head covering, as a part of her uniform. Even though the school has never in all their history granted any sort of accommodation to their very strict dress code, officials said they would consider the request.

The incoming student got her answer on Tuesday, and that answer was a big fat “no.” Citadel President Lt. Gen. Jon Rosa issued the following statement:

“While we hope the student will enroll in the college this fall, the Commandant of Cadets, after considerable review, determined the uniform exception cannot be granted…

The standardization of cadets in apparel, overall appearance, actions and privileges is essential to the learning goals and objectives of the college. This process reflects an initial relinquishing of self during which cadets learn the value of teamwork to function as a single unit.”

Council on American-Islamic Relations spokesman Ibrahim Hooper had called on the school to send a “message of inclusion,” because tolerance and diversity and hate and all that jazz. Hooper then went on to insist that Mennonite women wouldn’t face the same obstacles, which is hilarious because Mennonites are pacifists so there really aren’t any records of Mennonite women beating down the doors to get in The Citadel, but whatever.

The point is, in the one in 1,000,000 chance that a Mennonite woman DID want to get into The Citadel with her head covering intact, odds are school officials would send her an even bigger “hell no” since they wouldn’t face any backlash from liberal activists and social justice warriors.

Naturally, the woman and her family are considering their “legal options.”

Citadel student Nick Pinelli had a lot to do with bringing the situation to a wide audience, thanks to this epic Facebook post:
