Let the blame game begin!
The Ted Cruz campaign is doing some Monday morning quarterbacking on how the runaway train carrying Donald Trump’s presidential aspirations could have been derailed … and they found a culprit in Marco Rubio.
CNN is reporting that the Cruz campaign believes Trump could have been defeated if Rubio would have agreed to create a “unity ticket,” playing second fiddle to the Texas senator.
“State of the Union” host Jake Tapper reported Sunday that Cruz wanted Rubio as his vice presidential running mate — sorry Carly Fiorina — and blames his Senate colleague’s refusal for losing out to Trump.

Of course, the Rubio camp could point to polls that consistently showed their candidate was the more electable option between the two and suggest that perhaps Cruz should have yielded to Rubio.
CNN said the Cruz campaign reportedly did some “secret polling” at the time that showed a Cruz-Rubio ticket would result in a “blowout” of Trump in several upcoming states. But a source said Rubio “went off the grid” and could not be reached by phone.
Cruz campaign officials speculated that Rubio was more interested in protecting his political brand for possible future contests.

Rubio reportedly was not interested in the “unity ticket” and saw all the talk as little more than vague discussions.
CNN expanded on some his reasoning, according to a source:
For one, the source said, Rubio thought the notion of two senators from Washington, D.C., teaming up against Trump would fit all too easily into the Trump outsider narrative. Second, Rubio was concerned that as a fellow Cuban-American freshman senator, he didn’t think he complemented Cruz particularly well. Lastly, Rubio felt that the nominee should have the freedom to pick whomever he or she wants at the convention to help win in November and not be bound to a short-term decision made in the thick of the primaries. The lack of bounce after Cruz attempted such a move with Carly Fiorina reinforced his belief that he was right, the source said.
The reaction on social media was not too friendly toward the Cruz campaign, with plenty of comments about how Cruz’s eventual vice presidential pick Carly Fiorina was thrown under the bus here.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:

@jaketapper so it’s HER fault, huh.

@jaketapper This type of behavior is what turned off so many to Cruz. Blame game and no honor.

@jaketapper The Cruz camp should give it a rest. Blaming Rubio because he wouldn’t tie his career to Ted’s Titanic is sad.
