Likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had one of those moments on the campaign trail Monday that probably had her wishing she’d stayed in bed.

Clinton was participating in a round table in West Virginia when an out-of-work coal miner confronted her over an earlier comment she made about putting coal miners “out of business.”

Having recently lost his job, Bo Copley choked up on emotion as he questioned the candidate about her remark.

“I just want to know how you can say you’re going to put a lot of coal miners out of jobs and then come in here and tell us how you’re going to be our friend,” Copley said. “Because those people out there don’t see you as a friend.”

During a Ohio town hall in March, Clinton spoke about using clean renewable energy as an economic opportunity in coal country “because we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.”

Clinton responded to Copley by offering a mealy-mouthed explanation that her past comment was “a misstatement, because what I was saying is that the way things are going now, we will continue to lose jobs.”

“I don’t know how to explain it other than what I said was totally out of context from what I meant,” she added. “Because I have been talking about helping coal country for a very long time.”

She then came about as close as a Clinton can come to apologizing.

“I do feel a little bit sad and sorry that I gave folks the reason, or the excuse, to be so upset with me, because that is not what I intended at all,” the candidate said. “Now I can’t take it back, and I certainly can’t get people who, for political reasons or very personal reasons, painful reasons, are upset with me. What I want you to know is I’m going to do everything I can to help, no matter what happens politically.”
