Removal of a North Carolina law will determine whether the NBA All Star game will be held in Charlotte as planned.
Commissioner Adam Silver is holding off on setting deadlines for the NBA in the hopes that continued dialogue with state officials will be productive in eliminating the “problematic” law that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people.
“We’ve been, I think, crystal clear that we believe a change in the law is necessary for us to play in the kind of environment that we think is appropriate for a celebratory NBA event,” Silver said at an Associated Press Sports Editors meeting Thursday, reported Fox News.
The NBA event is scheduled for February 2017 and Silver did not think rushing into a decision was necessary at this point. Political and business leaders in the state gave Silver the indication that the law could be changed, reported Fox.
“The sense was that if the NBA could give us some time, they in the community of North Carolina were optimistic they would see a change in the law,” said Silver. “They weren’t guaranteeing it and I think which was why my response was the event still is 10 months from now, we don’t need to make a decision yet.”
According to the North Carolina law, transgender people are required to use public bathrooms that correspond to their birth gender. They are also not included in state anti-discrimination protections. The controversial law has prompted many entertainers to cancel performances scheduled in the state.
