Video: GOP senator defends ‘bipartisan love’ group hug on Senate floor

In an uncharacteristic show of bipartisan unity, four senators — two Republican and two Democratic — joined in a group hug on the Senate floor Monday night following a vote.

Republican Sens. Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Tim Scott of South Carolina joined Democratic Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota to celebrate the passage of the Defend Trade Secrets Act.

It began with a side-hug between the two Republicans; then Heitkamp joined in, followed by Booker.

The legislation, which tightens the law governing the theft of trade secrets, passed unanimously, 87-0.

Heitkamp obtained a copy of the video and posted it on Twitter, adding that “a little bipartisan love” kicked off “the start of the week.”
