The battle between Apple and the FBI over security protection of the San Bernardino shooter’s cellphone has now affected decisions at a state level.
Arizona’s Maricopa County has announced it will no longer be offering Apple iPhones for its staff as Attorney Bill Montgomery said the tech giant’s refusal to comply with law enforcement “puts Apple on the side of terrorists instead of on the side of public safety,” Fox News reported Saturday.
“Fox & Friends” Clayton Morris confessed, “When I first heard this story I thought it was a joke,” asking Montgomery how he could tell employees “that they couldn’t use one of the most secure phones in the world.”
Montgomery denied the move being a public relations stunt, saying it was based instead on his fiscal responsibility to not give taxpayer funds to a company that refuses to cooperate with law enforcement.
“The issue for me is not internal security,” Montgomery said when pressed about the security of other models of phones that were available to the staff. “We don’t have an issue with that.”
Montgomery believes Apple’s cooperation in breaking into the locked cellphone would not mean everyone’s personal privacy would immediately be at stake.
“I put my faith in protecting my privacy,” Montgomery said, “in the Fourth Amendment in our Constitution. I’m not going to put my protection of my privacy in the hands of some benevolent corporate CEO who thinks he’s the privacy messiah.”
