Cruz blamed for more dirty tricks over fake Trey Gowdy endorsement post

Sen. Ted Cruz finds himself under fire again for questionable campaign tactics after a fake social media account claimed South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy recanted his endorsement of Marco Rubio in favor of Cruz, saying he had made a “grave mistake.”

The Rubio campaign responded by accusing Cruz of more dirty tricks, but the Texas senator denies any involvement.

A Facebook account under the name Trey Gowdy Prayers — it has since been deleted — quoted Gowdy as switching his support from Rubio to Cruz.

“It’s official, I have changed my mind. My previous endorsement of Marco Rubio was a grave mistake,” the fake post said. “The recent South Carolina debate revealed his total lack of integrity, intellect and foresight … To all my Christian and Conservative friends in South Carolina, I hereby formally endorse Ted Cruz for President of the United States.”

The real Gowdy responded by demanding that Cruz “repudiate these dishonest and underhanded tactics.”

“In the last week, we have seen a systematic effort by Sen. Cruz and his allies to spread false information and outright lies in the hopes of winning votes by appealing to our lowest common denominator,” Gowdy said, according to the Washington Examiner. “Now, Its been reported that a fake Facebook page has been used to fool South Carolinians into thinking that I no longer support Marco Rubio and that I’m instead supporting Ted Cruz.

“Nothing could be further from the truth and I’m demanding that Sen. Cruz and his campaign repudiate these dishonest and underhanded tactics,” Gowdy continued. “We can have a debate about the future of our party and our country. But we need not leave our integrity behind.”

Cruz responded to the controversy on his own Facebook page.

“Our campaign had absolutely nothing to do with this fraudulent Facebook post,” he wrote.

With the questionable tactics employed in Iowa against rival Ben Carson still fresh on everyone’s mind, Cruz came under heavy fire on social media over the latest incident. Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:

Interestingly, more than one user blamed Republican frontrunner Donald Trump and his “insane clown posse.”
