Taking fear mongering to another level, Harry Belafonte said on Sunday that President Barack Obama’s election “shocked a lot of racist forces in this country” and that there’s been a “reversal” in race relations in America.
Chasing ghosts from the past, the singer and far-left activist said electing a black president “awakened a right-wing energy” in the country and warned that “black people are once again at the doorstep of a new wave of racist definitions and racist practices.”
Belafonte, who once said the president should “act like a third-world dictator” and jail those who oppose his agenda, was discussing the treatment of black actors by Hollywood during an appearance Sunday on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” which host Fareed Zakaria characterized as an unusual “two bad years.”
“I don’t think it’s just two bad years,” the liberal recording artist said. “I think if you look at the spectrum of race relations in this country, on a lot of fronts, there is a retrogression, there is a reversal.”
Channeling his inner-Hillary Clinton, Belafonte blamed it on a vast right-wing conspiracy.
“If you take a look at the way in which the right-wing movement in this country has gerrymandered voting districts, if you look at employment records, if you look at a lot of practices, black people are once again at the doorstep, the new wave of racist definitions and racist practices,” he continued.
Zakaria asked if the election of a black president played a role.
“I think a lot of the hurdles, problems that Obama has faced is really very much based upon the fact that there is a force in this country that says no black man should ever be at the helm of this country,” Belafonte said.
