Sen. Marco Rubio, a lawyer, forgot the first rule of courtroom tactics: Never ask a witness a question unless you already know the answer.
The Florida Republican sparred with presidential rival Sen. Ted Cruz over immigration at Saturday’s GOP debate, and referred to the 2013 immigration bill Rubio helped draft as “the Rubio-Schumer amnesty plan,” a proposal that never got passed.
“Marco has a long record when it comes to amnesty,” the Texas firebrand continued, before bringing up an appearance Rubio made on a Spanish-speaking TV network.
“Marco went on Univision in Spanish and said he would not rescind President Obama’s illegal executive amnesty on his first day in office,” he said.
“I don’t know how he knows what I said on Univision because he doesn’t speak Spanish,” Rubio shot back with a smile.
At that point Cruz proved Rubio wrong by speaking to him in Spanish.
