Sen. Ted Cruz promised to filibuster any appointment President Obama makes to fill the vacancy left by the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
Host George Stephanopoulos appeared taken aback by this.
“Does that mean that you’re going to filibuster anyone — anyone that President Obama nominates?” he asked the Republican presidential candidate on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday.
“Absolutely. This should be a decision for the people, George,” Cruz said. “Let the [presidential] election decide. If the Democrats want to replace this nominee, they need to win the election.”
On a historical note, although Obama always says he wants a clean confirmation process for his appointments, he didn’t exactly practice that himself when he served in the Senate.
Obama is the first U.S. president in history to have voted to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee.
