Cruz lays on heavy smack talk over Trump’s debate drop, offers alternative solution

Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz laid down a challenge to rival Donald Trump to a one-on-one debate.

Cruz, appearing on conservative talk radio Mark Levin’s show Tuesday, responded to Trump’s announcement that he would not be participating in the GOP debate hosted by Fox News later this week.

Every presidential candidate owes it to voters, the Texas senator said, to “go and humble yourself and put yourself before them and answer their hard questions.” Cruz remarked that he and the real estate mogul are “effectively tied” in the presidential race, and if Trump is “afraid of Megyn Kelly,” he was welcome to “participate in a one-on-one debate” with him.

As for who would moderate the “mano a mano” debate, Cruz offered a few options.

“We could do it a number of ways, we could have you moderate it, Mark. We could have Sean Hannity moderate it. We could have Rush Limbaugh moderate,” he said.

Cruz also offered to debate his rival with no moderators at all.

“But you know what? If he’s afraid of Megyn Kelly, if he’s afraid of you, and afraid of Hannity, and afraid of Rush,” Cruz said, “then we could do without any moderators whatsoever. I’m happy to go an hour-and-half, mano a mano, me and Donald with no moderators anytime before the Iowa caucuses.”
