There’s a political split in the “Duck Dynasty” family as father and son stars endorse different candidates for president.
GOP candidate Donald Trump is the man for Willie Robertson while his father, Phil Robertson, has endorsed Trump’s rival Ted Cruz. The two explained their differences on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Monday.
“It could have been worse,” the senior Robertson said of his son’s support for Trump. “He could’ve said, ‘Dad, I’m going with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders’… Then we would have had some worries.”
Explaining that his son, as a grown man, could vote for whichever candidate he wanted, Phil Robertson said his own choice to back Cruz was a simple one. The Robertson patriarch said he based his decision on James Madison’s view that the Constitution was written for “a moral and religious people.”
“So I just looked at Cruz. He stood out in my mind as being a moral and religious man. I thought to myself, ‘Good enough for me,'” he said. “It’s about that simple on my part.”
Willie Robertson believes the current system is broken and said he wanted a leader who could “shake it up” while not chasing after the money. He stands behind Trump because he said he “likes a man who puts his money where his mouth is, pays for his own thing and is not in debt to anybody,” adding that Trump’s success as a businessman in New York more than qualifies him for the job.
The elder Robertson clarified that he did not dislike Trump, and if the real-estate mogul won the nomination, Robertson would be “all in.”
“Think about the alternative here: Hillary Clinton? Bernie Sanders?” he asked.
They continued their assessments of the GOP rivals by comparing shooting and hunting skills.
