Whether it was deductive reasoning or unadulterated greed, a New York man secretly divorced his wife almost immediately after wedding her in a calculated move to allegedly protect his assets.
Gabriel Villa, 90, married Cristina Carta Villa twenty years ago, but hedged his bets by quietly arranging for a divorce in the Dominican Republic a few months later, according to the New York Post.
Unbeknownst to the blushing bride.
The pair met in 1994 and Cristina left her job teaching Italian literature at Boston College to share a life with the lawyer and travel agent, the Post reported. A good life that included having a child and jetting between homes in New York and France.
“He was absolutely charming, and despite our age difference, it was love at first sight,” Cristina, 59, told the newspaper.
Fast forward 20 years, and she is suing the charmer to nullify the divorce she never knew about.
“I realize now that during all the years of joy and happiness, and of difficult moments we shared together, my husband lied to me and had the Dominican divorce on the back of his mind,” Cristina said. “It’s what is hurting me the most.”
That and the fact that her potential ex-husband is selling a Manhattan apartment they shared — the going rate is roughly $1.4 million, according to the Post.
“It’s a fraud,” Cristina said of the Dominican divorce that was never registered in New York.
She found out about the divorce after seeing a tax bill for the apartment that did not include her name and hiring a lawyer to investigate.
Though the experience apparently has not put a damper of her affections for the man.
“It was and somehow it’s still a great love,” Cristina told the Post. “Gabriel is a very charismatic man, strong, intelligent and very charming. I think we could say I was a loving and caring wife and mother.”
