Trump swings counter-punches: ‘William F. Buckley would be ashamed’ of National Review

Donald Trump fired back at National Review after the magazine published a scathing editorial Thursday.

The Republican front-runner unleashed on Twitter, calling the conservative magazine “a failing publication.”

The magazine minced no words in its editorial piece, calling the GOP candidate “a menace to conservatism.” Sporting a cover that simply said “Against Trump,” the issue featured a collection of  essays by distinguished conservatives who oppose the real-estate mogul’s bid for president.

“Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones,” the editorial began.

Trump wasted no time responding, and cited the magazine’s founder, William F. Buckley, who started the publication in 1955.

The Republican National Committee responded as well by dis-inviting the magazine from the Feb. 25 GOP debate. In a blog post Thursday, National Review’s Jack Fowler wrote, “We expected this was coming. Small price to pay for speaking the truth about The Donald.”

Reaction on Twitter was mixed; most comments focused on Trump’s grammar skills (or lack thereof).

Many defended the candidate and gave the National Review scathing reviews of their own:
