After President Obama indicated his intention to issue more gun control executive actions, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a 25-century-old challenge to the president — come and take it.
The president indicated in his weekly address this week that he would be meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to work out executive actions on “reasonable” gun control executive actions due to the inaction of Congress on the subject.
“The gun lobby is loud and well-organized in its defense of effortlessly available guns for anyone,” Obama said in his address. “The rest of us are going to have to be just as passionate and well-organized in our defense of our kids.”
Abbott, a Republican and former Texas attorney general, fired back in this tweet:
Obama wants to impose more gun control. My response.#? COME & TAKE IT @NRA #tcot #PJNET https://t.co/RUPbcev5jY pic.twitter.com/8VNwisj966

And for that very reason — that Texas was a separate country before becoming a state — some legal analysts have concluded that it has the power to secede from the Union also.
Jan. 1 also marked the day that open carry became legal in Texas.
@GregAbbott_TX @RobForshey @NRA I enjoyed open carry today! Thank you for the restored freedom governor

“Come and take it,” or “come and take them” is the response the Spartan soldiers gave to the Persians at Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.
When the Spartans were down to about 300, versus Persia’s more than 100,000, the Persian’s demanded that the Spartans surrender and throw out their weapons. The Spartans replied, “Come and take them.”
Here’s Obama’s address, via the White House. He begins talking about gun control at about the 1:20 mark.
