The Obama administration’s Department of State is including “Bringing Peace, Security to Syria” in its end of the year recap of of accomplishments.
Huh? Have they talked to any actual Syrians lately?
“The United States and many members of the international community have stepped up to aid the Syrian people during their time of need — the United States has led the world in humanitarian aid contributions since the crisis began in 2011,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in the department’s official blog.
Deputy State Department spokesman Mark Toner defended the Syrian “accomplishment” during a Monday press briefing, according to The Hill, stating that “the operative word there is bringing, not brought, so we’re bringing peace and security to Syria.”
But no one is buying it.
It’s generally agreed that the president’s “lead from behind” policy in the Middle East has been, if not the direct cause, then at least a catalyst to the conflict in Syria and northern Iraq.
The United States left a huge vacuum when it pulled out of Iraq without having a status of forces agreement in place — a vacuum that was filled by Islamic State terrorists.
Former Florida Gov. and presidential hopeful Jeb Bush tweeted:
What alternate universe is Obama Admin living in where they count “bringing peace” to Syria as 2015 accomplishment? https://t.co/VufjeIbfVl

And then there were these.

Then again, maybe Kirby didn’t mean “peace” but rather something else.

Does that mean an end to President Barack Obama’s plan to bring in thousands of Syrian refugees now that peace and security has been restored to that country?
Other diplomatic “accomplishments” the State Department claims it made in 2015 include, reestablishing diplomatic relations with Cuba and winning the fight against violent extremists.
Dissidents who are still left rotting in Cuban prisons would argue with the former, and the true refugees fleeing the terror-ridden Middler East would beg to differ with the latter.
