Muslim ACLU director ‘emphatically’ refuses to condemn Islamic terrorism

A deputy director for the Michigan chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union stated that she “emphatically” refuses to condemn Islamic terrorism “just because I’m Muslim.”

In a piece that was published Monday in The Washington Post, Rana Elmir wrote:

As an American Muslim, I am consistently and aggressively asked — by media figures, religious leaders, politicians and Internet trolls — to condemn terrorism to prove my patriotism.

I emphatically refuse.

She then lumped in acts of terror committed by Islamic extremist groups such as al-Qaida and the Islamic State with those “advanced by mostly white men.” She said one is as alien to her as the other.

Accordingly, because she has never been asked to renounce “Dylann Storm Roof’s attack on parishioners of a historic black church in South Carolina,” she feels there’s no reason for her to condemn acts of terror committed by Islamists.

“I will not be bullied into condemning terror perpetrated by psychopaths who misrepresent and distort Islam for their deranged purposes,” she said.

“Muslims across the globe are not threats. They are threatened.”

She goes on to say that because of political rhetoric, “Islamophobia” is on the rise in the United States, and cites FBI statistics as proof. But she didn’t go far enough with the statistics.

CNS News reported earlier this month that 57 percent of religious hate crime is directed at Jews; a mere 16 percent targets Muslims. CNS said:

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports: Hate Crime Statistics, 2014, there were 1,140 victims of anti-religious hate crimes in the U.S. in 2014. “Of the 1,140 victims of anti-religious hate crimes: 56.8 percent [56.8%] were victims of crimes motivated by their offenders’ anti-Jewish bias.” That amounts to approximately 647.52 instances where Jewish individuals, businesses or institutions were targeted.

A mere “16.1 percent [16.1%] were victims of anti-Islamic (Muslim) bias,” amounting to approximately 183.54 instances where Muslim individuals, businesses or institutions were targeted.

“I will always do my part and fight for justice,” Elmir concludes. “But terrorism is not mine. I will not claim it, not even through an apology.”
