A Bradenton, Florida father is begging thieves to return his dead son’s military uniform and other memorabilia.
Keith Dougherty said his son, Marine Corporal Scott Dougherty, was killed fighting in Iraq in 2004 when his battalion was hit with tar bombs, according to Fox 13 News.
“He didn’t make it,” Dougherty said of his son. “After the second explosion, they had to use DNA to find out who was who.”
Dougherty wears his son’s dog tags daily and stored Scott’s military ribbons, uniforms and old clothes inside a trailer that sat in the parking lot behind Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, where he works as a maintenance supervisor, the Fox affiliate reported.
He got a call Wednesday morning saying the trailer — and his son’s belongings — was gone.
“His boots, his uniforms, his battle fatigues… It means nothing to nobody, but it means something to me and my daughter,” Dougherty said.
The trailer also contained tax documents, camping and paintball equipment for his family, Fox 13 News reported, but Dougherty said the thieves can have all that, he just wants his son’s belongings back — and he’s asking for the public’s help if they come across the property.
“They can have the trailer and everything else, just let me have the military stuff,” he said. “That’s all I ask.”
