The recent death of a retired Marine proves the old adage that fact really is stranger, and in this case, more miraculous, than stories of fiction.
Fred Kaffenberger, 80, was a member of The Sons of the American Revolution and died while placing wreaths at Leavenworth National Cemetery earlier this month. The final wreath he would lay would be that of his son-in-law, Fox 4 reported.
Kaffenberger’s patriotism was deeply rooted with an ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War, according to Fox. He proudly wore the uniform of his ancestors as he educated others about America’s history.

“It was something he was proud to do, he didn’t feel silly, didn’t feel ridiculous he felt like he was helping educating this country,” his wife Wanda told Fox 4.
“His final wreath he was getting ready to lay was my husband’s when he collapsed and was gone,” daughter Amber DiGiovanni said.
“Hollywood doesn’t write things as great as this man’s story,” DiGiovanni’s widow said.
Doctors aren’t sure what it was that killed Kaffenberger, but his family is relieved he died quickly while doing something he loved.
“This is the way he would’ve chosen to go. Wouldn’t you want to go doing what you love to do and go in an instant?” Wanda Kaffenberger asked. “Yeah, I would too.”
