Republican presidential contender Dr. Ben Carson is calling for closer scrutiny of an American organization that bills itself as a civil rights group — the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, and is asking that it be designated as a terrorist group.
While Donald Trump is calling for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration and Sen. Ted Cruz wants to end resettlement of all Syrian refugees, Carson’s focus is on what could be the fox in the henhouse.
“Our country faces grave national security threats. We must act boldly and decisively to protect American citizens from terrorists at home and abroad,” Carson said in a policy statement he released Tuesday. “We can no longer dawdle while ISIS continues to persecute Christians, enslave young girls, oppress civil societies and perpetrate terrorist attacks against the free world. We must destroy their caliphate and prevent their terrorists from infiltrating our homeland. We must also secure our borders, identify radical Islamic extremism by name and root out its agents and collaborators in our own country. My ‘Seven Steps for a Safer America’ offers a path forward for confronting these threats and protecting this great country.”
His seventh step dealt with CAIR and other organizations.
“The Department of State should designate the Muslim Brotherhood and other organizations that propagate or support Islamic terrorism as terrorist organizations, and fully investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and a supporter of terrorism.”
CAIR, which was established by both the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas in around 1993, is considered a terrorist organization by the United Arab Emirates and was an un-indicted co-conspirator in the 2007 terror-finance trial against the Holy Land Foundation.
CAIR’s response wasn’t long in coming.
“Ben Carson is a failing candidate grasping at straws and seeking payback for CAIR’s previous criticism of his anti-Muslim bigotry,” Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper told NBC News in a statement. “He found that Islamophobia gave him a boost in the past, so he is trying it again.”
Carson previously said that he couldn’t support a Muslim, who practices Sharia law, as a U.S. president.
Earlier this week, former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy had this to say about the group.
“CAIR is a Sharia promotion organization masquerading as a civil rights organization,” he told Fox News host Megyn Kelly Monday.
“Its purpose is to be an apologist for Islamic supremacism” while purporting to be a civil rights organization “because that’s very appealing in the West.”
