Brooklyn judge sworn in on Quran, instead of Bible

In a sign of the times, a Brooklyn Civil Court judge who used a Quran to be sworn into office finds herself mired in controversy.

Carolyn Walker-Diallo, elected last month, took her oath of office Thursday as a civil judge in Brooklyn’s 7th Municipal District and opted to use the holy book of Islam instead of the traditional Bible, prompting a wave of criticism, according to the New York Daily News.

A video of the ceremony was posted online by Facebook user Mohammed Mujumder:

The criticism comes on the heels of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump proposing a temporary ban on Muslims coming to the United States. A stance the candidate adopted after a Muslim couple, to include a jihadi bride who recently immigrated to America, initiated a terrorist attack in San Bernardino that claimed 14 lives.

The responses to Mujumder’s video post include:

“Another piece of shit Muslim. Trying to take over this country.”

“Wow! Very sad that so many sees no problem with this video. America was founded on The Holy Bible.”

“How is using anything other than the holy bible to be sworn in acceptable?”

“Absolutely disgusting. What a shame and pitiful place New York has become.”

Walker-Diallo has not commented on the incident, but supporters are concerned for her safety, the Daily News reported.

“It’s really horrific what’s happening,” Sadyia Khalique, director of operations for the New York chapter of the Council on American–Islamic Relations, told the New York Daily News. “This is a proud moment for her, and to have this much criticism is just really sad. In our society, there is so much hate.”

The newspaper noted that Walker-Diallo made a reference to her Muslim faith on a post on her campaign page thanking supporters.

“All is praise (sic) is indeed due to the Most High!” the judge wrote. “I am humbled that my community has entrusted me with the immense responsibility of ensuring that EVERYONE has notice and a FAIR opportunity to be heard in the halls of justice.”

Previously, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., was sworn in as a member of Congress using a Quran.

The reaction on Twitter is similar to what was seen on Facebook:
