Trump gets sucked into ‘phony’ Justice Scalia affirmative action controversy

Donald Trump‘s critics are quick to tag him as a racist and a bigot, but the Republican front-runner was openly critical of remarks made last week by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on the effectiveness of affirmative action.

During oral arguments in a case challenging affirmative action at public universities, Scalia said some minority students who have a hard time qualifying for elite universities are likely to fare better at “less-advanced schools.”

“There are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school, a slower-track school where they do well,” he said.

Liberals are being accused of hyping up the comments. One tweet summed up an opposing point of view: “Phony Scalia controversy my least favorite thing lately. Of course those who are academically competitive don’t need demographic favoritism.”

Trump responded Sunday in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” saying Scalia’s comments were “very tough to the African-American community.”

“I don’t like what he said, no, I don’t like what he said,” he told host Jake Tapper. “I heard him, I was like, ‘Let me read it again,’ because I actually read it in print, and I’m going, I read a lot of stuff, and I’m going, ‘Woah.’”

Ironically, Trump said Scalia was one of his favorite Supreme Court justices at a townhall in South Carolina on Saturday, Twitchy.com noted.

Some took Trump’s reaction as support for affirmative action, which is not exactly a conservative tenet. The Hill reported that he has been supportive of the policy, but “declined to say whether he was in favor of it today.”

The candidate did talk about his relationship with the black community.

“I have great African-American friendships,” Trump said. “I have just amazing relationships. And so many positive things have happened.”

The reaction on social media was mixed, here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
