The latest example of art imitating life can be seen in a new HBO show that is expected to “draw open an iron curtain behind which viewers will see the highly impenetrable world of Jihadi recruitment.”
Titled “The Recruiters,” the show is being developed by Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow, according to The Wrap.
Bigelow, who won an Oscar for directing “The Hurt Locker,” will team with former HBO president Carolyn Strauss as executive producers.
Somali rapper/poet K’naan Warsame will write the script and direct if it goes to pilot — he will also share executive producing duties.
With the nation coming to grips with the San Bernardino shooting, carried out by a Muslim terror couple who had become radicalized, the timely story “will delve into another hot-button issue for which Bigelow has become known: how jihadists are radicalized and recruited,” The Wrap reported.

The drama is set in Minnesota, which has the nation’s largest concentration of Somali immigrants and is home to “Little Mogadishu,” the Minneapolis neighborhood proven to be fertile ground for Islamic groups recruiting new fighters, CBS News reported in August 2014.
As many as 40 young men from Minneapolis were recruited by jihadists through social media.
“They’re using Twitter, they’re using Facebook, they’re using any means available to get in a computer system,” community leader Omar Jamal told CBS News.
But not to worry, being Hollywood, viewers can expect dark alleys and plenty of cloak and dagger. It’s less likely the show will risk being labeled Islamaphobic by peering inside mosques, where radicalism often takes root.
