Deceased terrorist Tashfeen Malik may get her just reward: since no one has claimed her body, San Bernardino County could cremate her remains—in violation of Islamic law.
Malik’s bullet-riddled body is still in the county morgue along with her husband Syed Farook. Farook has local family who are expected to claim his body, but nobody has stepped forward for Malik.
“No one wants to claim her and no one wants to do the funeral,” a prominent member of the Muslim community said, Fox News reported Friday. “They are all waiting for someone else to be the one to take care of this part of it.”
If Malik’s body remains unclaimed, the county will likely go with the cheapest option, and that’s cremation. Islamic law prohibits cremation, and even al al–Qaida terror mastermind Osama bin Laden was given an Islamic sendoff—more or less. U.S. officials read final prayers in Arabic before burying his body at sea, wrapped in a white shroud.
Boston Marathon bomber Tamerian Tsarnaev, brother of convicted terrorist Dzhokhar, was killed by police in 2013 and finally given an Islamic burial in Virginia. That only happened because a devout Christian coordinated an interfaith service at an unmarked gravesite.
While such an act of forgiveness and mercy is possible for Malik, nobody has moved a muscle, despite one Islamic expert’s prediction. “Since it is obligatory to bury a Muslim’s dead body, many Islamic institutions will probably be willing to do the burial,” said Daniel Akbari.
Akbari is a certified Sharia lawyer and Islamic expert for the Supreme Court of Iran, according to Fox News. “Some might be cautious and wait to see if others do the job. But what is certain is that Farook and his wife will be buried in an Islamic way,” he predicted.
“If nobody claims a body, it is turned over to the public administrator, who will handle it civilly and not religiously,” local lawyer Troy Slaten said. “Cremation is usually standard because it’s the cheapest option.”
Another attorney, David Wohl, told Fox News, “The state is not going to care about religious tradition. She was a terrorist.”
