Colorado Chapter board member of the American Civil Liberties Union, Loring Wirbel, recently suggested shooting supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump “before election day.”
Wirbel compared the real estate magnate and his proposal to temporarily halt immigration of Muslim refugees to Nazi Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels and the Third Reich’s “final solution.”
Wirbel wrote in (and then deleted from) his Facebook page:
The thing is, we have to really reach out to those who might consider voting for Trump and say, “This is Goebbels. This is the final solution. If you are voting for him I will have to shoot you before election day.” They’re not going to listen to reason, so when justice is gone, there’s always force, as Laurie would say.
Here’s a screenshot of his post, via The Daily Caller:
Social media exploded, beginning with this gem from David Burge:
Colorado ACLU director makes strong 2nd Amendment stand, encourages people to shoot Trump voters https://t.co/8LdeQ1TeLi

No fan of Trump, but if you are threatening to shoot his fans … you’re doing it wrong. Good catch @Daniel_J_W_Cole pic.twitter.com/JTvHn4Ur6P — Aaron Gardner (@Aaron_RS) December 10, 2015

In a follow-up, Wirbel referred to Trump as a “hate speech felon,” an odd reference from a board member of an organization that purports to support the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech. He wrote:
Well, at least the entire world can come together on one topic: Trump is a hate-speech felon who should be in prison. He’ll probably become more popular as a result.
But at least he no longer called for shooting Trump’s supporters — for the present.
One person commented, “I don’t understand how speech can be felonious.”
“There was a little droll intended in that – the European leaders ( even Cameron) want their own speech laws applied,” was Wirbel’s answer.
Even to the point of calling for the shooting of those who support a particular political candidate?
