The father of San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook has been placed on the FBI’s terrorist watch list.
The elder Syed Farook, 66, was placed on the list Monday as officials have expanded their search to the family and friends of the terrorist couple who killed 14 Wednesday, the New York Post reported.
The 66-year-old has been watch listed because of his relationship with his son and his own trips to Pakistan.
“Farook, although he is dead, is now officially listed by the FBI as a terrorist,” a federal law-enforcement source told The Post. “His father is watch-listed because of his close association to Farook and his extensive ties to Pakistan,” an official told the Post.
This comes days after the elder Farook called his son a “momma’s boy” who’s outlook was far more conservative than his.
It also follows Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s declaration that the terrorist’s mother Rafia Farook, who lived with the jihadi couple, would be looked at “very, very closely” after MSNBC discovered a certificate of achievement to her from a Muslim organization that, like the Islamic State, supports the creation of a caliphate.
“The mom definitely has exposure as a potential co-conspirator,” a law-enforcement source told the Post. “We are trying to uncover any evidence of her possible involvement which could lead to charges.”
Another official told the Post they are concerned because they believe people saw the change in Farook in particular but said nothing to authorities.
“There were people within their circle who saw them change, Farook especially, and no one said a word to the authorities,” the source said.
Meanwhile Farook’s family issued the following statement of apology.
The Farook family would like to extend their deepest sympathies and condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims in Wednesday afternoon’s horrific event at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California.
We have cooperated with law enforcement and will continue to do so.
We understand there are many questions that need to be answered but right now, our hope and prayer is for peace and healing for the victims, their families, friends, and colleague, the entire community of San Bernardino, and those touched by these events throughout the state of California and our nation.
