Dad knew San Bernardino terrorist son was a radical; says Farook was a ‘mama’s boy’

Syed Farook, 67, the father of Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the accused San Bernardino shooters, revealed that his son supported the Islamic State and looked forward to the destruction of Israel.

He also said that his son, who lived with his former wife Rafia, was “a mama’s boy.”

Farook made these statements from his California home in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa, according to the Daily Mail.

The elder Farook said his son, who was killed along with his Pakistan-born wife after the pair had killed 14 people, had strong religious views, and would rarely attend parties with her because he felt other men shouldn’t see her dancing.

The Daily Mail reported:

Mr Farook added that he tried to argue with his son that opposition to Israel was best done with politics rather than weapons, and became angry with his son after seeing that he had acquired a gun.

The father also made a bizarre claim to the younger Farook that the Jewish state would not exist in two years because world powers such as the US, China and Russia did not want it and all of the Israelis would move to Ukraine.

Mr Farook said that he despaired at the choice his son had made and questioned why with a stable income, a new baby daughter and a seemingly happy marriage and life he appears to have become radicalized into militant Islam.

. . . He said that his younger son had sided against him with Rafia, and that Rizwan had said his parents’ marriage must end after an argument about Jesus Christ where the future gunman called his father an ‘unbeliever’.

“He [the younger Farook] said he shared the ideology of Al Baghdadi to create an Islamic state, and it was fixed with Israel,” the elder Farook told the paper.

When asked whether his son was in direct contact with terrorist groups either here or abroad, Farook couldn’t say for sure, adding, “who knows, with the Internet and all that technology.”

The New York Times reported:

Mr. Farook’s father was an alcoholic and could be violent, capable of lashing out at his wife and children, according to statements his mother, Rafia Farook, made in a series of divorce proceedings beginning in 2006. The father, also named Syed Farook, called his wife names, screamed at his children, hurled home appliances and, at the worst moments, grew so combative that his children had to step between him and his wife, she asserted.

The elder Farook said that his life in the United States is most probably over due to his son being labeled a terrorist.
