You can thank Obama for jacking up your pizza cost, Brooklyn restaurant tells customers

While President Obama never promised if you like the price of your pizza, you can keep the price of your pizza, the owner of a Brooklyn pizza joint blamed the president’s signature healthcare law for her recent price increase.

Francine Stephens, owner of Franny’s, points to Obamacare as the reason she added 3 percent to checks, a step she was forced to take to offset the $200,000 cost of federally mandated insurance for her 50-plus employees, according to the New York Daily News.

And in explaining the add-on, she got in an unintended jab at Obama on transparency.

“This is a cost that we cannot absorb without going out of business,” Stephens said. “We’re quite sensitive to raising prices too much so we wanted to offer transparency.”

The pizzeria is not the first to take such actions, as restaurants in San Francisco and Florida have taken similar action.

Businesses with more than 49 full-time employees face a fine of $2,000 per worker per year if they do not offer reasonably priced health insurance as mandated by the Affordable Care Act, the Daily News noted.

Franny’s announced the Obamacare surcharge on its website: “A three percent surcharge will be added to all checks to cover the Affordable Care Act for all Franny’s employees.”

Stephens hopes customers will understand, but knows some customers are struggling in a tepid Obama economy and may have to curtail their visits.

“This is not a cost we can internalize,” she told Eater. “The three percent is a very fair and honest number of what my company’s health costs will be.”

“On a realistic level, I think a number of our guests will not be able to come as much,” she added.
