The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the country’s top ranking military official, contradicted President Obama’s narrative on the Islamic State.
“We have not contained ISIL currently,” Gen. Joseph Dunford told Virginia Rep. Randy Forbes on Tuesday during a House Armed Services Committee hearing.
That assessment is in stark contrast to what Obama said just one day before the Paris terror attacks.
“I don’t think they’re gaining strength. What is true is that from the start our goal has been first to contain, and we have contained them. They have not gained ground in Iraq. And in Syria, they’ll come in, they’ll leave, but you don’t see this systematic march by ISIL across the terrain,” the president said Nov. 12 in an ABC News interview.
The remarks came at the same hearing where Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Special Operations forces would be deployed to battle ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
