A man who claimed to be on a mission to kill “white devils” was arrested before he could do any damage.
A 21-year-old engineering student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Jabari R. Dean, 21, posted a threat to kill “approximately 16 white male students and or staff” on the University of Chicago campus Monday as well as bring about his own demise while killing white police who responded to the scene.
Dean said the shootings would be in retaliation for the killing of Laquan McDonald who was shot 16 times by Officer Jason Van Dyke last year.
“This is my only warning. At 10 a.m. on Monday mourning (sic), I am going to the campus quad of the University of Chicago. I will be armed with an M-4 Carbine and 2 Desert Eagles all fully loaded. I will execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time McDonald was killed. I then will die killing any number of white policemen in the process. This is not a joke. I am to do my part to rid the world of the white devils. I expect you to do the same,” he wrote anonymously on worldstarhiphop.com according to court records obtained by the Chicago Tribune.
A 16-year-old World Star Hip-Hop reader from New York reported the threat to the FBI, according to the Tribune.
“I basically saw it and got scared for a minute and thought this is serious. I took screenshots of it,” he told the Tribune.
In response the University of Chicago shut down its campus Monday and had students stay in their rooms.
FBI counterterrorism officials determined that the threat was credible but after arresting Dean law enforcement classified him as not dangerous because he didn’t have the weapons to go through with the assault, the Tribune reported.
