Deputies found a newborn baby buried alive under rubble after alert citizens called 911 when they heard muffled baby cries along a dry riverbed near Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 4 p.m. Friday that a baby was crying in the riverbed in Compton, according to a statement published on Facebook by the department’s Special Victims Bureau.

Deputies Perry and Collette found the newborn, believed to have been born within the last 36 to 48 hours, wrapped in a blanket and cold to the touch, buried under pieces of asphalt and rubble inside a crevice along a bike path.  The baby girl was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Angel Flores, a resident near the location where the infant was found, told KTLA-TV he was approached by two women who said that they had heard cries while walking in the area. One of the women initially thought the noise was made by a cat.

That one 911 call certainly saved the baby’s life. At a news conference, sheriff’s Sgt. Marvin Jaramilla said, “If the child had spent the night there, in those conditions, the baby wouldn’t have survived.”

“Some parents of newborns can find themselves in difficult circumstances,” the sheriff’s statement continued. “Sadly, babies are sometimes harmed or abandoned by parents who feel that they’re not ready or able to raise a child, or don’t know there are other options.”

In California, parents can legally surrender a baby at any hospital or fire station, no questions asked. Authorities have asked for the public’s help in identifying the parents of the newborn.
