President Obama decided to make his Thanksgiving Day address all about politics, by shoehorning in a comparison between the Pilgrims of 1620 and modern-day Syrian refugees.
“In 1620, a small band of Pilgrims came to this continent, refugees who had fled persecution and violence in their native land,” Obama said. “Nearly 400 years later, we remember their part in the American story – and we honor the men and women who helped them in their time of need.”
At that point, the president compared those fleeing the Middle East to the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock and were assisted by the natives.
“Nearly four centuries after the Mayflower set sail, the world is still full of pilgrims – men and women who want nothing more than the chance for a safer, better future for themselves and their families,” he continued. “What makes America America is that we offer that chance.”
He added that he was touched by those who had written him “offering their homes” to the refugees and said those refugees would undergo an intense vetting process.
“Now people should remember that no refugee can enter our borders until they undergo the highest security checks of anyone traveling to the United States,” he said.
The president indicated that he would veto a proposal that would not allow anyone to enter the United States until they’d been cleared by U.S. intelligence agencies.
Here’s his address.
Lots of folks took to social media to express their disgust at using a day to give thanks to push a political agenda. Here are a few examples:
Now the @POTUS is trolling #Thanksgiving. What a sad, pathetic man. #SyrianRefugees https://t.co/TJzuEYWyf6

Obama needs a history lesson indeed, because he didn’t think the comparison through. Other Europeans followed the pilgrims and eventually took over and displaced the native Americans.
Wait. I’m confused. The left always told us the pilgrims were evil invaders who displaced Indians & brought disease. https://t.co/JYJtbQdHN0
