Former Islamic extremist Maajid Nawaz eviscerated President Obama’s handling of Islamic State militants Monday on “The Kelly File,” calling his actions a “policy of obfuscation.”
Nawaz, who spent years in an Egyptian prison for his activities against former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s regime and is the author of “Radical: My Journey Out Of Islamic Extremism,” is a frequent critic of the Obama administration’s handling of terror.
“Unfortunately, I don’t think this current administration has had this issue of Islamist extremism correct from day one,” Nawaz told host Megyn Kelly.
He listed the president’s referral to the Islamic State as a junior varsity team and his “red line” against Syria that turned out to be a bluff.
“The policy from day one has been a policy of obfuscation, denial and, unfortunately, a lack of action and a lack of strategy,” he said.
“I don’t think we’re facing World War III,” Nawaz said, in reply to what some others have opined. “On the contrary, what I think we’re facing is a global jihadist insurgency.”
Kelly brought up one item that many Republicans have criticized the president for — his refusal to call jihadists Islamic extremists.
“There’s a danger if we don’t name this thing ‘Islamist extremism’ and isolate it from mainstream Muslims, and then undermine it,” he said. “When we don’t name something, the vast majority of people who don’t really understand these complex conversations will assume the problem is with the religion of Islam and Muslims, themselves.”
