The Washington, D.C. chief of police recently said that when confronted with a dangerous situation and no law enforcement officers are around, the best thing to do is to “take the gunman out.” But her jurisdiction’s gun laws are so extreme that gun ownership is difficult, and obtaining a concealed carry permit next to impossible.
Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier was asked what to do when calling 911 isn’t enough, on Sunday’s edition of CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
Terror is a growing threat worldwide, and when you add school shootings and mob violence into the mix, you come to the conclusion that the world is a dangerous place.
Lanier offered two possible courses of action when confronted with danger, and then gave a third that she thought was the best action to take.
“Your options are run, hide, or fight,” said Lanier. “If you’re in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there,” she said.

The problem is, her city doesn’t want anyone to have a firearm.
Investigative journalist, Emily Miller, wrote of the struggles she went through in order to even purchase and register a weapon in D.C., in her book, “Emily Gets Her Gun: …But Obama Wants to Take Yours.”
She decided to purchase a weapon after the Supreme Court declared Washington’s outright handgun ban unconstitutional. Her decision was also prompted by a recent home invasion.
The Washington Times review of her book stated:
Little did she know that she was now face-to-face with a bureaucracy entrusted with the function of implementing one obstacle after another, for a total of 17 steps, to allow a person to register a gun. This really meant 17 steps to dissuade a person from registering a gun.
Later, when the courts found Washington, D.C.’s refusal to offer carry permits unconstitutional, the same Miller of “Emily Gets Her Gun” decided to apply for one. She recorded what she went through on “Fox & Friends,” and illustrated how frustratingly impossible it was to get a concealed carry permit in Washington, D.C.
