An elderly couple stopped a burglary in progress when they held the thief at gunpoint until police could arrive.
They caught the burglar red-handed loading stolen items from their home into a vehicle, Albuquerque police reported to a local news station.
“The old man goes inside his house arms himself with a shotgun, tells his wife what is happening and she arms herself with a handgun,” Albuquerque Officer Tanner Tixier told KRQE News 13.
Police said Aaron Lujan was loading the couple’s items into a stolen SUV when the 70-year-old man tried to stop him. When Lujan ignored him, the man and his wife came out with their weapons drawn while neighbors called the police.
An APD body cam depicts the officer’s arrival and arrest of Lujan.
Court records indicate that Lujan was released from jail on a prior burglary mere hours before he began his crime spree.
A friend of the couple said their action didn’t surprise him at all. The man is a veteran and his 66-year-old wife enjoys hunting.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all that she would be willing to confront somebody that is doing wrong,” Ron Paneboeuf told the station.
And it’s a good thing they did, the police said.
“More than likely he would have gotten away,” said Tixier. “He would have gotten into the stolen vehicle that he was loading the items into and we probably never would have seen him again.”
KRQE reported:
APD doesn’t encourage people to arm themselves and go after thieves unless they pose a direct threat to someone’s safety.
They said the best thing to do is call police and wait for them to arrive.
