NBC agrees to be scolded by Hispanic lawmakers, then uses a ‘VERY BAD WORD’

deborah-donald-juanThe Congressional Hispanic Caucus is trying to strongarm television networks? What country do we live in again?

When NBC and MSNBC executives tried to smooth things over Wednesday with Hispanic members of Congress after Donald Trump’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” they only made matters worse.

They used the “I” word.

NBC News President Deborah Turness was describing to members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus coverage by NBC’s Spanish language network, Telemundo of Pope Francis’ visit, according to Politico.

She recalled that during that time, a young girl approached the pontiff and expressed fear that her parents may be deported because they were “illegals.”

“I’m going to stop you right there. We use the term undocumented immigrants,” Rep. Juan Vargas, a Democrat from California interrupted.

“She was saying how they’ve done all these great things and then boom, she said ‘illegals,’” Vargas told Politico.

Turness apologized, but then made matters even worse by pandering to the lawmakers by speaking Spanish.

“We love the Hispanic community…Yo hablo español,” Turness reportedly said.

Politico reported:

But that didn’t go over well with lawmakers, some of whom left irate. Six Hispanic Caucus members and additional aides who were in the meeting said the members came to the meeting wanting NBC executives to address diversity hiring and the Trump appearance.

But the NBC officials said they were not in position to discuss Trump’s SNL appearance because they represented the news side of NBC. That prompted the lawmakers to question why NBC didn’t make more of an effort to bring someone who could.

“There was a lot of frustration in the room,” Rep. Tony Cárdenas, another California Democrat said. “You know that (Trump is) an issue on all of our minds and as soon as you start talking about it, you say none of the executives for the entertainment (division) are here. It was a cop out. It was disingenuous.”

The meeting was scheduled because the lawmakers wanted answers as to why NBC’s entertainment division used Trump as an “SNL” guest host despite a formal protest being registered by members of the caucus.

NBC would have been much better off had it’s executives been honest. Having Trump guest host was a business decision — and it was one that had paid off.

And government officials interfering with business decisions not only goes way beyond their pay grade but is also un-American.
