Louisiana gubernatorial candidate and Republican Sen. David Vitter is getting fallout for running an ad depicting scenes from Friday’s Paris terrorist attack to go after his opponent, who pledged to support President Obama’s Syrian refugee program.
Too soon?
Vitter tweeted Monday afternoon that “Obama is sending Syrian refugees to Louisiana & John Bel Edwards pledged to work with him to bring them here!”
Accompanying the tweet was a video depicting scenes taken from Friday night’s Paris attack by Islamic extremists, beginning with the disruption of the French-German soccer match by suicide bombers.
It continues depicting other scenes from the attacks, as a voice-over says, “One of the Paris ISIS terrorists entered France posing as a Syrian refugee. Now, Obama’s sending Syrian refugees to Louisiana.”
Then, the narrator gets to the pitch.
“David Vitter warned Obama the dangers of Syrian refugees weeks ago, and promised as governor, no refugees would enter Louisiana,” the voice-over says. “John Bel Edwards has pledged to work with Obama to bring Syrian refugees to Louisiana.”
Here’s the tweet with the video.

Vitter managed to pick up some limited support, such as this one.
@DavidVitter Great ad! Louisiana citizens deserve the truth about Edwards. He supports Syrian resettlement. #lagov pic.twitter.com/t4zaoGf09I

But the overwhelming majority of folks on Twitter were appalled.

I didn’t think you could stoop any lower. @davidvitter https://t.co/TV4lbx6hq0

@DavidVitter You’re disgusting for using this in an ad.

Among the most interesting of all observations were these two.
@DavidVitter have to give it you. It takes a true politician to turn a massacre into political advantage.

@DavidVitter Politicizing a terrorist act already? Have you no shame, Mr. Vitter? Well, we know you don’t, but not even a tiny shred?

Of course, no one is better at politicizing tragedy than Democrats — most notably President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.
The most recent example was in the hours after Oregon’s Umpqua Community College massacre.
