‘Jesus had 2 dads’ sign on NY church dropped Catholic jaws all over the world

A Buffalo, N.Y. Catholic church was ordered to remove a sign on its lawn after it drew the ire of fellow Catholics from around the world.

The sign, which was still present Monday, read “Jesus had 2 dads and he turned out just fine,” WKBW reported.

When Catholic Family News editor John Vennari saw a picture of it he couldn’t believe it wasn’t Photoshopped so he drove to the church himself and took a picture of the sign Tuesday and wrote an article that criticized it for being “pro-homosexual.”

“This pro-homosexual sign effectively mocks the Blessed Trinity, mocks the Hypostatic Union, mocks the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph – some of the most sacred components of our Catholic Faith,” he wrote.

Church Sign

Buffalo Diocese Bishop Richard J. Malone ordered the church to remove the sign immediately after he read the article and he released a statement.

“As soon as I learned of this sign, I took immediate action to have it removed,” the statement read. “The pastor of SS. Columba-Brigid Parish told me that the ‘2 Dads’ were meant to refer to a child who has both a father and stepfather. However, given the potential for the meaning of this message to be misunderstood and even perceived in a heretical way, it was immediately removed.”

According to WKBW Catholics from across the globe called in to complain about the sign.

Church pastor Rev. Roy Herberger told Buffalo News he came up with the idea for the sign after he “Googled ‘funny church signs.'”

“My only purpose was to say, ‘Look, hang in there. People understand what you’re going through. Don’t give up on yourself,” he said.

Herberger is an admitted liberal who said he has had problems with “super-conservative traditional people in the past.”

The pastor did, however, comply with the order from Bishop Malone to remove the message which has been changed to “Walmart isn’t the only saving place.”
