Miami Beach mayor called “Bloomberg South” in Vanity Fair story on sea-level rise – Fresh off his reelection last week, Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine may see his political stock rise even higher after publication of a Vanity Fair story titled “Can Miami Beach Survive Global Warming?” paints the mayor in a very favorable light for pushing the city’s anti-flooding pumps program amid rising tides. Levine, a wealthy cruise industry entrepreneur, is compared to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg no less than four times in the piece, which delves into the Beach’s uncertain future in the face of sea-level rise and the pumps plan. Lopez-Cantera announces endorsements of nine Central Florida lawmakers – Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera on Wednesday rolled out his first round of endorsements in the Republican Senate primary. On the list are nine state representatives from Central Florida, including five he served alongside in the House between 2004 and 2012. His campaign says more names are coming soon. Read more
Florida’s anti-casino group staked with $195k – An anti-gambling political committee received an infusion of $195,000 last month as it considers pursuing a ballot initiative about casinos in Florida, according to a newly filed finance report. The committee, dubbed “Voters in Charge,” began raising money last month and received the $195,000 on Oct. 23 from the non-profit group No Casinos Inc. Read more
Morgan’s medical-marijuana contributions grow to $1.8 million – With another infusion of nearly $238,000 in October, a law firm headed by Orlando attorney John Morgan has contributed more than $1.8 million this year to a ballot initiative to legalize medical marijuana, according to campaign-finance records. The group People United for Medical Marijuana, which is seeking to get a proposed constitutional amendment on the 2016 ballot, raised $337,292 in October, with $237,979 of that amount coming from The Morgan Firm PA. Petition aims at putting Medicaid expansion in Florida to a vote in the 2016 presidential election – The political action committee Florida Health Solutions launched a petition drive this week to get a constitutional amendment supporting Medicaid expansion onto the Florida ballot in 2016. Florida is one of 20 states that has not expanded Medicaid under the provisions of Affordable Care Act. Read more
