Baby Got Back‘Baby Got PAC’ group backing Rubio – Multimillionaire John Jordan, a prominent GOP donor, is launching a super-PAC named “Baby Got PAC” in support of Sen. Marco Rubio’s (Fla.) 2016 bid, Time reported Tuesday. The group’s name is a tribute to a 1990s rap song by Sir Mix-a-Lot. The super-PAC’s inaugural ad notes that Republican voters have many choices for their 2016 nominee from a crowded field. Read more

Rep. Corrine Brown likens redistricting plan to slavery – After a Florida Supreme Court hearing for oral arguments in the state’s congressional redistricting case, U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Jacksonville, issued a harangue against maps proposed by all parties in the case and the arguments they used. She said the maps discussed, which would erase her north-south district stretching from Jacksonville to Orlando and move it from to an east-west district running from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, would dilute the voting power of black voters and were akin to treating black voters like “slaves.” Read more

Legislature asks Florida Supreme Court to pick a different congressional map – The three-year battle over Florida’s congressional boundaries moved to the state’s highest court Tuesday where lawyers for the Legislature tried to get a trial court map declared unconstitutional but instead found themselves defending the way lawmakers handled two Hispanic districts in Miami-Dade County. Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente, who authored the landmark ruling in July that invalidated Florida’s 27 congressional districts, grilled the attorney for the Florida House for “jumping over” portions of the ruling “as if it didn’t exist.” Read more

A multi-million-dollar October for utility-backed solar amendment – In just one month, a solar power initiative backed by major utility companies have flexed some serious muscle. Consumers for Smart Solar’s October haul: $2.3 million. Yes, million. That’s double what they’ve raised since forming in July, almost triple what another solar power group — Floridians for Solar Choice — raised this year (although that group’s October financials were not yet available when this post was published). Medical marijuana group’s October haul: 337K – Cash continues to flow to the group trying to legalize medical marijuana in next November’s election. In October, United for Care, the group sponsoring ballot language for medical pot, raised $337,293, according to financial reports made available Tuesday. Read more
